The Pulse of Contemporary Turkish

For the past eight years, I’ve been engaged in a project that is about as far from mathematics as one could imagine — coediting an English anthology of contemporary Turkish poetry with my good friend, Buğra Giritlioğlu, who is the founder of the queer publishing house obiçim yayınlar.

Our anthology, The Pulse of Contemporary Turkish, has just been published by Syracuse University Press and offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of Turkish poetry, featuring 172 poems by more than 60 poets, most of whom are still active today. From neo-lyrical verses to avant-garde experiments, our anthology reflects the rich tapestry of voices emerging from Turkey’s literary scene.

Buğra lives in Istanbul and has been engaged in a variety of publicity events with some of the poets in our anthology. Below are some pictures that Buğra sent me.

Buğra chatting with Olcay Akyıldız and Veysel Öztürk, both professors of Turkish Language and Literature at Boğaziçi University, during the first book launch at the Orient-Institut Istanbul (OII) on May 8th, 2025.
A close-up from before Olcay and Buğra decided to switch seats.
The poets in attendance, happily united with their books on the OII stage.
Buğra in conversation with Zeynep Uysal, another professor of Turkish Language and Literature at Boğaziçi University, during the second launch on May 10th at Frankeştayn, Istanbul’s only queer/feminist bookstore. (Bonus: a charming cat claimed the role of their unofficial moderator.)
